Model UN

I'm in a mentoring program and yesterday my Mentee and I went to the United Nations with about 60 other people in the program. It was really interesting listening to the history behind the building and getting to see the places were different world wide policies and recommendations are made. My mentee is Chinese and she's only been in the country for a year and a half, so she had a lot of questions about what our tour guide was saying. It's interesting how explaining information to her can make me remember what the guide said better. It's also funny how she misheard one piece of information in the section about UN peacekeepers and she was confused for most of the lecture. At the end of the tour, she asked me why our guide kept talking about "blueberries" and I had to explain to her what a beret was, and that fact that UN peacekeepers wear blue ones, so "Blue Beret" not "blueberry". She said the tour made much more sense after that.

It's interesting too, what kind of a place the UN is. It's a place of such power, but at the same time no real power. It doesn't make rules, it makes policies. It uses peer pressure to try to get countries to do good things, but has very little ability to enforce anything. It still feeds 1/3 of the world's population using it's Food Programs. It tries to make the world a better place for the 50% of the world's population lives on their country's equivalent of $2 a day. This doesn't mean they live on the equivalent of 2 American Dollars, which would not be a bad thing in some countries. This means that they live on the equivalent of what 2 American dollars would buy an American in the United States. For those of you who live in NYC, they live on the monetary equivalent of buying 1 subway ride a day. It sort of made me sick to stand there and listen to what the guide was saying. But, it's not like I actively do anything to make this situation better, and that just made me sicker.

I hadn't meant this post to be political, my trip to the UN yesterday just made me feel pretty lousy. Hopefully, I'll find a way to take how I feel and make something better. I was an International Relations major in college with a focus on Africa for crying out loud, it's not like this is information I didn't already know. But I guess when I had to stand there and explain to a child all the sad things that happen that our guide speaks about so nonchalantly, it sort of makes everything come more sharply into focus.

The Best Website Ever!

So, I realize that many people will disagree about it actually being "the best website ever", but I love it. Unless you are a prolific reader, this site is not for you. It's What Should I Read Next and it let's you type in the book you just finished reading and gives you ideas for your next book. You can also compile a list of books you've already read, and get ideas for books you would like based on them. I'm obsessed with it.

In other wedding news…I'm meeting with my Florist this weekend. I was originally going to go with a yellow/orange theme for the flowers, but now I'm thinking of doing something funky. I saw this example of a white/blue/green bouquet, and I think that might be pretty cool. They use eucalyptus and thistle and some other fun flowers. So it might be something like that, but like many things in life, it all depends on the price...

Why I Love Valentine's Day

I have to admit, I always loved Valentine's Day, but for me it has never been a day solely about romantic love. When I was little my Dad used to get me a small bouquet of flowers in addition to the larger one he'd get my mom. My grandparents and I would always exchange cards, and while you were still in elementary school, you'd get valentines from your friends. For me it's a day to celebrate everyone you love, not just the love of your life (although I celebrate him most)

Now, before anyone reading this imagines I'm saying this from a place full of wonderful romantic valentine's days, believe me when I say I'm not. I didn't have date on Valentine's Day until after I graduated college. (Disclaimer: this story is not about Fiancé, but an ex-boyfriend) I was so excited about finally getting to celebrate with someone I was dating. When we finally got together, we did not go out to dinner, just sat around and watched TV. We exchanged gifts, but while i had got him a pair of leather gloves (which he had told me he wanted) he got me a giant Hershey’s Kiss, from the drugstore... because I told him I liked chocolate. Thoughtful, huh.

But this experience, while discouraging, did not diminish my love for this holiday. There is so much going on in the world that's terrible and sad, that taking a day to celebrate the love you have for those around you is important. Yeah, it's a cheesy day, and yeah it's incredibly commercialized, but the sentiment is necessary.

Plane Tickets

So when I was getting the mail today, I found an envelope from our Travel Agent. We had originally been planning on booking everything ourselves, but decided instead to splurge a little and let someone else do it for us. We told her where we wanted to go (Rome, Florence, Venice & Lake Como) and she arranged everything for us. Included in the envelope from her, was a brochure for the hotel we're staying at in Lake Como. In this cold month of February, this place looks like heaven. You can see it here: www.hotelvillaflori.com/inglese/como_lake.html if you like. Apparently, we have a lake view room.

Included in the package also were paper ticket, well, just the receipt, and they really got me thinking... I can't even remember the last time I saw a paper ticket. I wouldn't know how to go about getting one of those instead of an e-ticket. It was probably some time in high school. It amazes me how much technology has changed things in the past 10 years. My 10 year high school reunion is in 2007, and I can't even imagine what it's like to go to high school now.

Muslin Fitting

I'm so exited! This Saturday, I'm going to go for my first bridal gown fitting. They're doing a muslin first, so that's what I'm going to get fit, and then they're going to make my gown from the muslin.

Mostly I think I'm just happy to get to try on a gown that actually fits me. When I went with my soon to be Mother-In-Law, there were only sample dresses to try on. They dresses were a little ridiculous on me as they were size 8/10 and I'm a 14/16. Plus, I'm over 6 feet, so they were all too short on me. It's hard to get an idea of what I'll look like in the dress, if it barely goes over my hips and has to be held up with pins in the back.

So wish me luck, I'll be starving myself till Saturday (just kidding, but how crazy would I be if I actually did that?)

Reading About Reading

So I just finished So Many Books, So Little Time?" by Sara Nelson and it was a very familiar read. I'm an obsessive reader, from a family of obsessive readers, and I too judge new friends based on what they read, and what they recommend to me. In fact, I've been friends with a girl I work with for over 6 months and have just now recommended a book to her (A Long Way Down by Nick Hornsby) because I wasn't sure how much her and my taste coincide. Luckily she loves the book...crisis averted.

The other fantastic thing about this book, is her willingness to admit to never reading many of the >Classics. So, in the spirit of that I'm going to admit to a couple never read/never finished myself:

A Confederacy of Dunces - Read half of it, couldn't appreciate the humor and never finished it

Any J. R. R. Tolken - Couldn't get past the language

Moby Dick - Was supposed to read it in 11th Grade English, couldn't stand it

All Dickens beside Great Expectations... no excuses for this

There are many more on this list that I should have read, but these are the ones that cause me the most guilt. I invite everyone else who reads this blog to list some of their unread classics and get that reading guilt off their chests.

We're going to Italy!!!

So we decided to go with the slightly more expensive photographer, because his photos were just so much better. I can't imagine hiring someone and expecting to get only okay photos. These, more then anything else, are what will be lasting a lifetime... we want to be able to show our kids and grandkids these photos and be proud of how these photos tell the story of our wedding.

In other news, we've started the process of booking our honeymoon. We're going to Northern Italy for 12 days. We're spending a couple days each in: Rome, Florence, San Como and Venice. I've been there once before, but Fiance hasn't. In some ways we're looking forward more to the honeymoon then to the wedding itself. We're just so excited to be able to be married, that neither one of us can relax until after the the wedding.
